Can I Come Out Now?

(Snapped on 11/30/12)

All right so...after weeks spent feeling mostly aimless and lost - I finally had a lightbulb moment, sometime last evening...and since today is the beginning of a brand new month, and tomorrow is my 44th birthday - it seemed a good enough occasion to unveil and initiate my brand new Big Ugly strategy.

 Here's the deal...

It wasn't images alone that got me into the trespassing trouble, it was also what I wrote to accompany those dastardly pics....and because of that, I'm starting to think that it might be best if I say as little as possible (if anything at all) about the selfpics that I post in the future. Which is a bit of a bummer since I really do love sharing the details of each shoot - but for now at least, I believe that a self-imposed gag order is simply a matter of self-preservation.

Since I will no longer be burning up precious time fussing with the text in my entries - I'm thinkin' it might actually be possible for me to start posting a single self-portrait a day, from now on (rather than the weekly series of related pics. that had kinda become my norm). I won't be staging daily shoots however, and so to fill in the gaps - I shall pluck older pics. from the archives, and intersperse them in the mix whenever necessary.

This new format will be very similar to the way my "Big Ugly B-Sides" on tumblr. used to be, for the first year or so that I had it up and running: random images posted daily, with no verbal explanation, but hopefully worth a look-see, nonetheless...

I'm not a big fan of change, and yet - that's exactly what this is. Oddly enough though, I'm excited about this alternate approach to blogging about my self-portraits. And I can only hope that you guys are, as well...

  1. I will look forward to your daily postings. I've always felt that your creative photos, especially the 10 sec. self portraits, spoke for themselves, and were the best part of any of your blogs or sites. If the older picks from your archives are ones that have not been previously published here, they will still be new to us.
I hope you have a very Happy Birthday, and a terrific upcoming year! I also hope that, that includes a very positive resolution to your present legal difficulties.

    1. @G. - I had a very nice Birthday, THANK You!

I hope you're right about the pictures being fine on their own...it just feels so strange to post 'em sans commentary. Anyone who used to follow my old Big Ugly Blog, knows how much I love to write, and although I scaled the text back dramatically, when I started this blog - the writing end of it has always been a big part of what makes blogging so gratifying...I guess the good news is - I should have more time now to devote to my shoots...

Yeah, I definitely plan on posting plenty of unfamiliar pics....and probably a few old favorites, as well.

    2. Of course both your talents as a writer, and a photographer, are enjoyed when combined, but both are more than able to stand on their own. I'd probably rather see more than less photos, but it will also be a treat to see something each day to see what you have created. Perhaps you could make new additions to the older Blog when the mood moves you to express your self in words. What I would most like to see from you, is that you are happy with whatever you desire to do, whether that is ever shared with others or not, but as long as I am able, and you publish examples of your growing, and ever improving creativity, I'll be interested in seeing it

  2. 44? ha! we are .. co.generationalists (i am June '68), tho' i could pass easily for your Sad Uncle. .. but, um, so.sorry to hear of your legal circumstance. hope that works out to your satisfaction. i was contacted Wednesday last by a High Point lawyer who doubles as the founder/head of a small record label ("Three Lobed Recordings"). it would all be a cast-off plot idea for TV's 'Portlandia' if it weren't so terribly real with authentic threats of legal action. a few months back i made a sort of "fan page" for a Virginia string band. noting that the band neglected to use the "dot com" for their official site, i purchased it. no big deal, right? well, Johnny Legalman says it *is*, claims i'm "diluting the band's brand." what? am i selling .. Black Twig action figures? lunch boxes? i am not. .. anyhoo, Legal stuff can be a *drag*. Best of luck !

    1. @S. Barrios - Sounds like your deal is slightly more arbitrary...which I am certain - makes it all the more maddening. Mine on the other hand is a cut and dry case - I broke the law, I got caught - end of story. Still though, you're right - any way you slice it - it's a *drag*...

Same birth year, eh? That's pretty cool! Happy belated! :)

    1. @Patrick - I want you to know that I have been playing around with the B&W effect on iPhoto, whenever I edit my pics., these days. But for whatever reason, the ones that I've taken in the woods and stuff - look really much much better in color (to me at least). But I promise to get you your black and whites - eVENtually!

You damn right! My most favorite costume will ALways be my Birthday suit!!!

  4. Happy Birthday, and may this be the resurgence of even greater creativity. I'm so glad to see you in action once again. Please don't let the Law hamper your creativity too much, and I for one, will miss you commentaries on the photographs. Perhaps I am living vicariously through your activities, not being able to do so in the flesh, so to speak.
    Go Girl.

    1. @Raymond - THANK You for the Birthday wishes, AND for the encouragement!

Ya' know, there may actually be times when I'll feel comfortable writing about particular shoots...I hope...cuz I'm starting to worry that without any stories at all - we'll all become painfully bored...
